Bloody brilliant, Len. Best belly laugh I've had in ages. Comparisons of Carlin with Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce are most valid.

Here's a few thoughts from freethoughtfirefighters.org

"If it's the truth you're looking for the people to ask are not the church ministers, the corporate giants or the high seats in office; they will tell you what they think you need to hear, and usually for self-serving reasons. No, if you really want the underlying truth go ask the court jester. You may not like what he has to say, but he'll tell it to you like it is; which is precisely why they were so valued by Kings.

George Carlin is one such court jester who is not only a talented artist and orator, but he is an American icon that grabs the public attention with his work. As much as the religious leaders would like to ignore him and just hope he goes away, they can't because Carlin is too popular and he commands immense public attention. In fact, someone like Carlin can do more to educate the public on the hypocrisy of religious intolerance in just one HBO comedy special than most organizations dedicated to such causes can do in a year, or even for the entirety of their existence. The reason is that he is in a unique position to speak to millions of people at once, about very serious issues that typically incite dissension and anger under normal circumstances, and yet he can make them laugh in the process. That is power! "

Len, your well chosen clips make great use of this newfangled intertube medium. Tres empowerin'.

Looks like the reviews are in. Carlin still rules ---and rocks!

And thanks for the reminders. I will see if I can track down some good tracks of Pryor and Bruce.

George Carlin is one such court jester who is not only a talented artist and orator, but he is an American icon that grabs the public attention with his work.

Carlin was "the Beatles" of comics. An icon. Not just a comic, he always just stuck it right up the establishment's sorry ass and got away with it.

A flicker of "thesis" comes to me. Is genius --genius of the Shakespeare, Carlin, Bruce, Twain sort --inspired to the degree that society sucks?

Would these true genius and their brethren simply wither away from boredom in Plato's ideal state? Henry Miller hinted as much in his essay "Reflections on Writing". He predicted a 'quantum leap', a time when life itself becomes art and art thus ceases to exist.

Clearly --that has not happened yet. Beat poets, comics, angry artists, outlaw troubadours and mere 'ornery cusses' like us still have much to write, sing, and crack wise about!

Some of us, however, are discontent with life at court. Jesters have overthrown crowns. The British pipers at Yorktown played a little ditty called: "The World Turned Upside Down".

no steenkin' editors. Not yet, anyway.

It's been a nice ride. I intend to fully enjoy before the forces of fascism and big bro decide we've had entirely too much fun at their expense.

Thanks, Diane. My circle of young, angry malcontents had many icons to look up to from Brubeck (et al) to the Beatles. Even among C&W, there were the "outlaws" --Willie, Waylon, Merle and a few other hard cases. I parted company with Merle on a number of issues. But I can't deny the man's talent. And, of course, there is Jazz and Blues, art forms borne of life's nitty gritty --its injusticies, it's unexpected extasies, a musical HOWL! I suggest Louis Armstrong's version of almost any Fats Waller song but especially "Black and Blue". Exquisitely beautiful melody, chords and poignant lyrics. Sends a shiver down your spine. Lyrics by Andy Razaf:

I'm so forlorn,
Life's just a thorn,
My heart is torn,
Why was I born?
What did I do to be so
Black and blue?

Carlin is not only hilarious but he's also a thinking person's comic. Enjoyed the musical interlude as well. Thanks for the good times, Len.

Thanks, PT. You are correct about Carlin. The guy's still hip, still sharp, still poking the establishment. Glad you enjoyed the music.

It's time for me to recognize the great comments from everyone here. I can't imagine how moribund this blog would be without this fascinating cast of characters. I dare not try to list everyone, because being human, I would screw up and leave someone out. You all know who you are.

Jazz is wonderful, Len,a few of my favorite jazz artists are, Ella Fitzgerald, Diane Shur, Larry Carlton, of course I do enjoy country music particularly Patsy Cline.
Of course, I also really enjoy, Crystal Gayle, the last time, I saw my Sister, in Tn. before she passed away suddenly, My Sister, took me to watch a taping of a new video, which Crystal Gayle taped, it was wonderful to see and hear Crytal's performance and share this my sister.

I only come by to see the picture of you wearing the cowboy hat and sunglasses.

Jazz is wonderful

Glad you got to see Crystal Gayle at work. I am pretty much into all music. It was Rossini, I believe, who said that he loved all music except the boring kind, a quote that was taken up by Arthur Fiedler. Growing up, I was exposed as much to Classical as country, perhaps more so. My father played "fiddle" and his brother played guitar. They were quite an ensemble. My cousin and I both studied classical violin but he boasted of having studied briefly with well-known Concert Violinist, Benno Rabinoff. Early on, I gave up the "violin" for the trumpet and learned to play some jazz and blues.

My last exposure to live C&W was not in Houston but recently in Europe, a C&W Festival where Willie Wainwright and Jennifer Weatherly performed. They are less well-known in the US. I met them briefly and learned that they now call Hawaii home after having lived in Switzerland for many years. They record in one of Europe's "highest tech" studios just north of Nyon on the banks of lake Geneva.
